Comparison of air rescue systems: use of rescue helicopters in Luxembourg and Germany

At the beginning of the year, a rescue operation in Luxembourg made headlines because an emergency doctor chose to travel to an accident site located 40 km away using a ground emergency vehicle (NEF) instead of the available rescue helicopter (RTH). This was not an isolated case, as several other emergency interventions had also given preference to the NEF.

In Luxembourg, two out of three rescue helicopters are not permanently staffed with an emergency doctor, unlike the situation in most other European countries. In the Grand Duchy, which has three NEF bases, emergency physicians can decide for themselves whether to travel by road or by air.

This case therefore provides an opportunity to compare air rescue systems between Luxembourg and Germany, in order to highlight the respective advantages and disadvantages of each system.
