City administration of Trier visits Luxembourg Air Rescue

Luxembourg Air Rescue had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from the city administration of Trier this week. Thomas Egger, head of economic affairs, tourism, culture, security and public order, together with Olaf Backes, chief fire officer of the professional fire brigade of Trier, took the opportunity to learn more about the activities of LAR.

During a tour of the LAR facilities at Luxembourg Findel Airport, the visitors gained insight into the organisation’s daily work. They visited the infrastructure and aircraft on site and learned how LAR is organised and how it operates.

Following a short presentation of LAR’s activities in Luxembourg and around the world, both visitors also took the opportunity to speak directly with members of the flight planning department and the control centre. They were able to gain a better understanding of the challenges the team faces every day, 365 days a year.

The visitors were highly impressed and praised the exemplary cooperation between Germany and Luxembourg in the context of cross-border helicopter missions. René Closter, President of LAR, pointed out that more than 1,000 missions carried out in the German border region in 2013 demonstrate that the European spirit is alive and that these operations help bring people closer together beyond the field of rescue services.

The delegation from Trier also showed great interest in the operational possibilities of the BambiBucket® system, a water container used for firefighting, as well as the longline system used for aerial rescue operations in difficult-to-access areas such as vineyards. LAR is the only air rescue organisation within a radius of 250 kilometres to offer this system.

In order to extend the existing cooperation to these areas, it was finally agreed to organise broad joint training exercises with the Trier fire brigade in the future.
