Laser attack on a Luxembourg Air Rescue helicopter

Yesterday evening at around 10 p.m., Luxembourg Air Rescue’s rescue helicopter AR3 was returning from a mission from Prüm hospital to its base at Findel under night flight conditions. While crossing the border southeast of Vianden, the crew noticed a laser beam coming from the right.

Thanks to the crew’s quick reaction and the immediate application of emergency procedures, which they are regularly trained for, direct visual contact with the laser beam was avoided, preventing serious damage. None of the crew members were injured.

Such a laser attack, which is strictly prohibited and constitutes a criminal offence, can cause temporary blindness of the crew and, in the worst case, lead to the crash of the rescue helicopter.

The crew was unable to determine whether the laser originated from Germany or Luxembourg. The incident was immediately reported to LuxRadar, which alerted Luxembourg Airport police. A complaint against unknown persons was filed.

Rescue helicopter AR3 of Luxembourg Air Rescue is primarily responsible for cross-border air rescue operations between Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.
